What is Synchronicity?
Submitted by arkiver on Fri, 2008-02-08 11:22. Synchronicity PrimerAn Introduction to Synchronicities
- What is a synchronicity??
- synchronicity
- The match formed by a piece of visual imagery (video tape or film) with an unrelated piece of music, which forms a new and different experience from that originally intended by either work.
![]() | Synchronicities are instances where a certain clip, or even a whole movie, are found to fit extraordinarily well with different music, specifically music that evokes a surreal, or psychedelic, feel, that is intensified by the pairing. This site takes its name from the Jungian term of "synchronicity," of a resonance formed between two events unrelated in time and space. This non-local, non-linear connection defies rational explanation. Although the majority of examples listed here cannot really be considered synchronicities in Jung's terminology, the term seems to describe the emotional state evoked better than anything else. |
Early in the history of film, it was discovered that the music a piece of visual imagery is displayed with has a powerful influence on how it is perceived and received by the human mind. Films with highly emotional, majestic scores were found to have a greater emotional impact on their audience than similar scenes with no music, or even silence. William S. Burroughs, always an experimenter with the art of montage, was one of the first pioneers to put random clips of film to different unrelated music, creating the art of the synchronicity. The concept was an integral part of the psychedelic scene of the 1960s.
Part of the appeal of synchronicities is that it allows the viewer a more active degree of participation in the viewing experience. Instead of just sitting there passively, you get to take part in what you see, by setting things up, by trying new combinations yourself. It's kind of subversive that way, because what you see is not necessarily what was originally intended as the viewing experience. It allows fans to reclaim participation in what they're seeing and hearing. It's a true multimedia experience, interactive at its easiest.
What do you need to venture into the world of Synchronicities??
| An Open Mind, a sense of humor, and, most importantly, WONDER!! | ![]() |
| A Stereo. A programmable CD Player is the easiest way to do the Synchs. Records (Vinyl), tapes, or 8-Tracks have been used as well, although much more difficult. |
| A Television, for your viewing enjoyment. The bigger, the better... | ![]() |
![]() | A VCR, for the video portion of the Synch. |
I first became interested in synchronicities when a friend of mine showed me the Jupiter And Beyond The Infinite synch listed here. I think if you try this, you too will be hooked on the concept. Give it a try.... experimentation is the name of the game here. Ideas and thoughts can be discussed on the SynchBoard.

| Starting this story thread, mainly to try and collect comments, about other synchronicity sites on the web. Part of the fun of the synching community has always been throwing up a site of your own and sharing your creations. I know about a couple, so those are listed here (click READ MORE to see the rest of this article)...
The Killing Joker
Submitted by Eddy on Mon, 2008-12-29 14:08.Just start the album at the very beginning of the movie, before the WB logo appears. On your dvd/blu-ray player, the time codes should match-up second-for-second (at least the first time around). You’ll know you have it right pretty quickly, a cymbal crash should coincide with the window breaking in the first shot.
I just left the album on repeat for the whole movie, so if your cd player doesn't have a repeat button, you'll need to pause the movie as soon as the album ends, start it over, and then un-pause the movie.
I'd have the lyrics handy while watching it, its hard to understand the singer, and they add to the synch.
NOTE: Killing Joke has two self-titled albums, their first album that cam out in 1980, and another that was released in 2003. You want the 1980 album, with the black and white photograph on the cover.
Alice Cooper in Wonderland
Submitted by David93Whitton1989 on Sat, 2008-12-20 21:31.If you own both The Beast of Alice Cooper and Alice Cooper Goes To Hell, import on iTunes or Windows Media Player and burn a CD. Before ding so, if you have windows Sound Recorder, record a 42-second or 40-second track that is silent (make sure the place is quiet first before you do so). Assemble the track listing as explained here:
1. School's Out
2. Under My Wheels
3. Billion Dollar Babies
4. Be My Lover
5. Desperado
6. Is It My Body
7. Only Women Bleed
8. Elected
9. I'm Eighteen
10. Hello, Hurray
11. No More Mr. Nice Guy
12. Teenage Lament '74
13. Muscle of Love
14. Department of Youth
15. School's Out
16. Under My Wheels
17. Billion Dollar Babies
18. Give the Kid a Break
19. Recorded silent track
20. Go To Hell
21. I'm Always Chasing Rainbow
Start the CD when the music of the movie starts and play all the way through but stop the CD when the movie ends.
The Mute Knight: The Bedlam In Gotham
Submitted by Mind At Large on Thu, 2008-11-27 02:46.this is a sync of The Dark Knight
with two of the best Mars Volta albums,
In my opinion. Its kind of a challenge,
so follow instructions carefully.
But it will not dissapoint.
Cheers.
First of all in order to do this you must have a copy of the song (not the album) "Frances The Mute." The song is rumored to have been the original opening track for the album, but space did not allow. The song can only be found as an mp3 from any various torrent site, or if you have a copy of "The Widow EP", it is the first song on there. The ideal setup for this sync is a dvd version of the movie, and the audio files either burned onto a homemade mix cd, or on a computer playlist that will allow you to run songs back to back ( I used computer audio). The homemade cd should inclued the following tracks:
1. Frances The Mute
2. Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus
3. The Widdow
4. Miranda, That Ghost Just Isnt Holy
5. Cassandra Gemini
6. Aberinkula
7. Metatron
8. Ilyena
9. Goliath
10. Tourniquet Man
11. Cavalettas
12. Agadez
13. Askepios
14. Ourborous
15. Soothsayer
16. Conjugal Burns
(I intentionally left out "Wax Simulacra" because of its short time and pointless nature on the album. It works better without it.)
That being said, cue up "Frances The Mute" (again the song not the album) at 03:15 seconds and begin rolling the movie when the first scene hits (the growing close up on the buildings). The movie will go on without pausing any part if you run the homemade cd; just sit back and enjoy the ride.
If you have several cds in a stereo, pause the movie once "Frances (song)" ends. Cue "Frances (album)" from begining. Play "Frances (album)" until it ends. Pause movie, cue up "Bedlam" from begining. Play until movie ends. Movie may keep rolling for 5 or 7 minutes after music has ended. It all depends on where the sync lies. But overall its perfect.
The fast paced movement of the music fits extremely well with the action in the movie. When its slow and dissonant, the movie is at a low point. Then it picks right back up again.
The lyrics also match with the scene themes almost immaculately.
This is a great sync.
Enjoy.
any problems leave me a comment.
Glad to be back.

Wish You Were Neo
Submitted by sega3dmm on Thu, 2008-10-23 09:22.This synch was not a random synch, this was an intentional synch by the directors of the Matrix, Andy and Larry Wachowski. In an interview, they explained if you start "Wish You Were Here" when Neo sees agents walking out of an elevator in his office builbing for the first time, the next 44 minutes of the movie would synch up with the entire album.
There is also another theory, not intended by the Wachowski brothers but was posted on "The Synching Ship." On that website, it explains that the synch starts earlier in the movie, when the Village Roadshow logo fades out. The checkpoint of this theory is when "the buzz in the beginning of 'Welcome to the Machine' should come in the instant the camera cuts to Neo's POV from his cubicle as he sees the Agents for the first time."
Dark Side of Down Under
Submitted by sega3dmm on Fri, 2008-10-17 08:57.Dark Side of Down Under was the first synch I've ever done. I was amazed that a blockbuster album and a lackluster movie can synch greatly!
Insert your Dark Side of the Moon CD on a CD player, or if you have digital files of the whole album, that's a good format (I've even used that when I synched it). On the exact moment Track 1 starts playing, pause the CD and program the player for a full album repeat. Now to prepare your video, use your VHS or DVD copy of The Rescuers Down Under and insert it to the specific player of the format you're using. I don't recommend Laserdisc. I highly recommend the Gold Classic Collection DVD, but VHS is fine.
If you're using DVD, select Play from the main menu. After you press play, on the exact moment the screen turns black, unpause the CD player and enjoy the synch!
If you're using VHS, you'll proabably need some rewinding and timing to do. The place to unpause the CD player will be about 3 seconds before the Walt Disney Pictures logo fades in. It'll take some time, but don't worry.
There's another theory where you would unpause Dark Side of the Moon when the Walt Disney Pictures logo starts to fade in. You can try both therioes and compare them!

The Power of 300
Submitted by Darkside on Sun, 2008-09-07 15:22.Start both the movie and the Cd at the same time with the CD on repeat. you know you have it when he says "bones" and you see a pile of bones
The connection. On the album cover, a guy is getting punch and his face all contorted. In the movie when the kids are fighting, he punches the kid on the ground and it gets all slow motion and resembles the punch on the album.
The first play through was ok and I didn't get to follow through on the second but here's what I discovered.
Mouth for War
Lyric "bones" as we see a pile of bones
Lyric "My ears can't hear what you say" as it looks like the old man cocks his head like he's trying to listen.
Lyric "releasing of anger" as we see the kid with anger in his face fighting the father
Lyric "close your eyes" as Teen Leonidas closes his eyes
A New Level
Lyric " a new level of confidence and power" as Leonidas returns and becomes king
Visual Sync: The spartan arm raises there arm three times in beat with the music
Walk
Scene/Song Title Sync: This works well because Leonidas says "let us walk" to the persian messenger.
Lyrical Match: Throughout the song the lyrics "Respect" play during this scene. The persian messenger disrespects Leonidas and this starts the war.
Lyric "Are you talking to me" as Leonidas points the sword at the persian in a threatening manner
Fucking Hostile
This Love (also ends right with the scene)
Lyric "you keep this love, thing, child, toy" as we first see the slave girl oracle that the creatures keep for their pleasures.
Rise (the 300 rise to the occasion to defend their land) starts right with the scene
Lyric "turn our backs on those who opposed" as the 300 turn away from the senate men who opposed them going to fight.
No Good (attack the radical)
Lyric "you'd better listen to a man who knows
what he's saying.I've seen your side,you run
and hide for the mere fact that you feel
inferior.Be superior, and know your interior " This fits very well with what is happening in the scene. The spartans meet the other army and he is talking to them about how they are not really soldiers.
Lyric "this land of fools will rise" as we see the 300 raising their spears three times again. They are not fools but they do rise to go fight. (one could say they are fools because they are going off to die; but it's for the greater good)
Lyric "low behold my eyes" as one of the spartans spots the mutant following them
Live in a Hole
Lyric "full of grief" as the spartans view the tree with all the dead bodies
Regular People
Lyric "i trampled along that road that you think you own" as the persian leader travels along the road only to come upon the spartans blocking the path with the wall
Lyric "you, you think you own, i take away" as the persian is bragging about how powerful they are and that they are going to invade and conquer
Lyric "I crush your rush" as the spartan leaps to chop off the arm of the persian as he tries to attack with the whip
Lyric " I take away, make it my own" just after he chopped off the arm
By Demons be Driven
No lyrical matches but the music goes great with the fighting.
Hollow
UPDATE: I played the sync all the way through and was quite pleased
Mouth for War 2nd
A New Level
Lyric “no fucking surrender” as Leonidas refuses to surrender to xerxses
Walk
Lyric “I’ve got more friends like you, what do I do” as the Spartans turn and the camera shows the piles of Persian bodies
Lyric “to bleed” as Leonidas goes down from the giant shedding his first blood
Fucking Hostile
Great with the fight scene
Lyric “Fucking” the camera zooms in on xerxes
Lyric “fucking” does it again
Lyric “fucking hostile” as xerxes is pissed about losing
This Love
The heavy chorus picks up when the rhinoceros is approaching and ends when he falls
Lyric “no more head trip” as the guy is laid out to get his head chopped off
The heavy slow guitar goes great with the slow motion fighting and then the acoustic guitar comes in and fades out as the son gets his head cut off
Rise
Lyric “every creed and every kind” as we see all of the mutants
No Good
Lyric “no chance” as the queen smacks the guy
Lyric “You blame oppression and play the role of
criminals,to rape and burn show progress is
minimal” plays during the scene that the queen gets raped
Lyric “this land of fools will rise” as Leonidas says “prepare for glory”
Live in a Hole
Lyric “fullof grief I scream at the wind” as we see the father grieving over his dead son
Lyric “I still feel incomplete” as we see the Spartan with the eye patch
Lyric “My fear grips” as Leonidas grips him on the shoulder
Leonidas lip syncs Phil Anselmo’s “Alone”
Song ends and transitions with the scene
Regular People
Lyric “I’m out here putting pride on the line” as the queen is in front of the senate
Lyric “and just in case you think your bad” as the guy stands up to another in the crowd
Lyric “don’t fuck with this” as the Persian holds his hands up to xerxes on his throne
Demons be Driven
Lyrics “With decline in mind
End not far
Were left hanging alone here” during the scene that the Spartans are huddled under the shields and surrounded
Hollow (This song is a match for the scene as it’s about a best friend dying and it’s the scene that Leonidas dies)
Nice slow song for the tragic ending
Lyric “ I shake my fists at skies above” as we see Leonidas holding out his arms to the sky above welcoming the arrows
Mouth for War
Lyric “Revenge” as the guy is talking about the spartans’ giving their lives
Lyric “Bones” as we see the pile of dead Spartans
Lyric
“I feel a conquering will down inside me, Strength, The strength of many to crush
Who might stop me, My strength is in number” during the scene when the army is ready to attack
Song transitions with the scene
The set-up: Just start both at the same time with the CD on repeat. Enjoy because this one rocks!
