Wish You Were Akira

Arkive 1.0

Wish You Were Akira

The Ingredients

Audio: Wish you Were Here by Pink Floyd
1975, Capital Records

Video:  Akira
1988, Streamline Pictures,
based on the manga by Katsuhiro Otomo

The Setup

A classic of Japanese animation (or ANIME), Akira, was one of the first of a new wave of animated films to break into the American consciousness in the late 1980s.  With its stunning visuals, and trippy theme, Akira has been a cult classic for years.

To set this synch up, put in the CD of Wish You Were Here and pause it.  Then put in the video of Akira. When the Streamline Pictures logo fades to black, unpause the tape.  The next shot is "Akira Commitee Production" and the film begins.  Then just sit back and enjoy the show.

The Source
This is a synchronicity I myself came up with while still in college. After seeing the incredible spectacle that is Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite (2001/"Echoes" match), we'd experimented with the Mind's Eye computer graphics videos.  Looking for another interesting combination, I immediately thought of Akira, one of my favorite films.  Well, you be the judge to how it all turned out.

The Evidence
This is another synchronicity that's just fun to enjoy, without worrying too much about whether or not it was intentional.  It illustrates pretty well what a great pattern finder the human mind is, and it also allows a great sense of participation in the experience.  It's everything a good synch should be.

I'll definitely try this.

I'll definitely try this. But do I have to use the Streamline version? Cuz I have the 2001 Pioneer version.

Also, there seems to be some kind of synchronicity with this and Billy Idol's "Cyberpunk". If you have that album check it out, playing the album right when the words "Produced by AKIRA COMMITTEE" appear on the screen.

There's also a topic I started over at IMDb, on the Akira board.

Streamline vs. Remastered

I actually never experimented with the new remastered version (that version's audio turned me off and it has been gathering dust on my shelf ever since)... maybe I'll have to dust it off and give it a try. This synch was one I used to do in college, and I thought it was fun. At the time, the Streamline version was the only "legal" version of Akira you could get in the States, as I recall...

I don't have BI's Cyberpunk... but maybe will have to look into getting that, it sounds like an interesting combination.

peace,
