Synchronicity Discussion

I just observed music matched to movie, which was posted by ANOTHER person. I have some feed back (we are tickled pink when somebody watches our ideas Smiling).

Keep in mind that there are many different aspects to monitor. Also personal memories play a big role in how you relate your observations.

A few areas of matching interest:
lyrical
musical
mood
timing
theme
surreal
surprises
harmonious and dead spots
overall performance

Grading is on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 is horrible. 10 is the best thing since birthday cake was invented.

This section will probably be duplicated when there is feedback for individual synchs.

Review - Matrix Absolution

I remember this one called something along the lines of Matrix Absolution(s) from the old Arkive, but I don't remember its creator. If someone could either claim credit or let us know who discovered it that would be cool. The Muse album Absolution is started when you first see Neo's boots before the lobby shoot-out in the first matrix film. The epic almost operatic energy of the music fits perfectly with the intensity of this section of the film. The arcing of the songs with the flow of the scenes it great. The themes in the lyrics also fit perfectly: "I'm not breaking down, I'm breaking out." There is only one small weak spot during the foot chase. The rest works very well. This one is definitely worth checking out.

Absolute Matrix

Thats one of mine R_Sammy.

The notes i have on a scrap of paper that i keep in the video case read as follows;

"Absolute Matrix
Start 5 seconds before you see Neo's boots enter Govt lobby.
Tracks 1 - 8"

Its not currently on my website as i overdid it with trying synchs for that section of The Matrix so i can no longer objectively tell which are good. But as a third party has approved it i may add it to my site! I remember the marching footsteps at the start of the album as we see Neo's boots...

Absolutely

Leighton came up with the pairing of Absolution and Matrix III. He lists it on his web site. Great Stuff.

Lucifer over Fantasia (part 1+2)

Looney Rune's "Lucifer over Fantasia (part 1+2)" uses the song "Lucifer over London" to cover the haunted moutain section of Disney's "Fantasia". The mood and lyrics matched well. The transitions of music and movie were good. I give the combination an "A". Bravo!

Its really a great synch. When showing the 'uninitiated' examples of synch films, (besides setting up JLS & Stego's version of DSotR dvd) I show Contact Echoes (stego) Being Geddy Lee (Dave Bytor), various segments of Shared Fantasia (various) & Looney Runes's Lucifer Over London. It goes over really well.

Thanks, Karl

I'm glad you liked. I have been thinking of maybe putting together some of the shorter synchs that I have seen and enjoyed and, with their creator's consent, posting them on my youtube channel with a title screen giving credit and pointing viewers to the appropriate website. Just a thought, we'll see what happens...

Review - Chicken Run / Enter The Chicken, By The Anomaly

I read about this in one of the Anomaly previous posts on a list of his synchs. I had both the CD and the Movie and thought it deserved a shot. The First Three songs; We are one, Botnus and Three Fingers, were phenominal. It had a great mood very angry and oppressed. Many visual connections to sounds, especially in Three Fingers, almost every word was mouthed by the chickens. But then i just gets boring after those songs. I would give it a B- for overall its worth a watch for the first half.

Current 93

Looney Runes' "2001: Dreammoves of the Sleeping King (part 1)" was interesting but the music is very experimental. I guess I was expecting the music to be more uplifting when Dave went through the rift in space and time. I give it a solid "B" because I do not really get into the music but still thought it had good merit. It sounds like somebody just left on a tape recorder on the floor of their car while driving to a fast food joint for late night munchies.

Thanks for the review

A quick google search revealed this synch is currently showing here... here...here...here...here...and here!

"It sounds like somebody just left on a tape recorder on the floor of their car while driving to a fast food joint for late night munchies." HAHAHA! That's hilarious. I think perhaps this type of "music" requires a more active type of listening than most are willing to commit to. Not like some ditty on the radio that plays in the background, this type of music is more suited for meditation, ritual and/or exploration. Perhaps it is more suited for headphone listening? The only review of this music (other than Karl's) that I could find online described it thusly..."a long surreal melange of sounds..."

At the "song's midpoint it also contains the march from Purcell's funeral music of 1695, commissioned on the death of the queen, but also the soundtrack to his own premature death that year. Because of the processing of the sample, it's hard to tell if it is taken from a proper recording (played on trumpets) or is in fact Wendy Carlos's synthesised arrangement which opened the soundtrack to 'A Clockwork Orange'. I thought this a strange coincidence, as Kubrick was behind both films.

At the end of "dreammoves" you may have also noticed this bit of dialogue: (David Tibet) “What is the world? Nothing. If it is nothing, why is it? The world is as nothing.” (another voice) “Bend over!” (laughter). Being the only words spoken in this song, I thought this rather sums up what a joke the universe/our quest for meaning really is and really contributes to the synch.

The lyrics to the second song in the synch (Time Tryth Truth) follow. The contemplation of human existence is a theme that, I think really goes well with Dave's journey. I suppose, as with all synchs, this is all a matter of perception.

"If I cast my eyes before me, what an
Infinite space in which i do not exist;
And if I look behind me, what a terrible
Procession of years in which I do not
Exist, and how little space i occupy in
This vast abyss of time..."

Like to the falling of a Starre;
Or as the flights of Eagles are;
Or like the fresh spring's gawdy hew;
Or silver drops of morning dew;
Or like a wind that chafes the flood;
Or bubbles which on water stood;
Even such is man, whose borrow'd light
Is straight call'd in, and paid to night

The Wind blowes out; the Bubble dies;
The Spring entomb'd in Autumn lies;
The Dew dries up; the Starre is shot; The Flight is past; and Man forgot

The wind blows out and the bubble dies
The spring entomb'd in autumn lies
The dew dries up and the starre is shot
The flight is past and man forgot

And earth covers earth
And time tryeth truth

2001: dreammoves of the sleeping king (pt.2 +3)

I did not like "2001: dreammoves of the sleeping king (pt.2+3)" The noise seemed random with the random visual. I give part 2 and 3 a "D". The music for part 2 sounds like somebody putting a tape recorder on the floor and vacuuming around it while kids are playing in a nearby room. The music for part 3 sounds like poetry that sort of matches the movie. Part 1 was much better.

Review - "Christian Death - All of the Stigmata" by looney runes

"I had never seen Stigmata before so i watched it a few weeks ago. I had never heard of the band Christian Death before so the music was all new to me and my first time hearing it was while watching the synch. Neither the film or the album are to my taste but put them togther as a synch and they work very well!

The first play starts really well, the short lead-in track and then the next two songs really set the mood and match the onscreen action for the entire pre-credits and credit sequence, drawing you into the synch. It all goes well for about 15 minutes but i felt there was a bit of a dip in the middle of the first play for perhaps 15 minutes with only an occasional match up. However i stuck with it and im glad i did as it picks up again and the first play ends very strongly.

The cd repeats and again the first few songs are very good. I felt the second play was better than the first as there was only one song that didnt fit, Track 6, which also seemed out of place in the first play. However the transition into Track 7 is great as is all of the track (one of the best parts of the synch) and the rest of the second play.

The cd repeats once more and we hear a few minutes to finish the synch. Again the first few tracks work very well as they did in the two previous plays, giving a satisfying end to the synch.

I would give this synch a 'B' as apart from the dip in the first play it held my attention throughout with lots of mood and music matches as well as some nice transitions. As im not familiar with the music i may have missed some lyrical matches but still managed to pick up quite a few, some that were very obvious."

Review - "Frances is De-loused in the Matrix" by R_Sammy

"I tried the first part of this synch today - 'Frances The Mute'.
It was quite tricky to get the start right but it was worth the effort.

The Mars Volta sing in English, Spanish and Latin and the lyrics are quite random so it was more of a musical synch than a lyrical one for me. With this in mind it was important for the music (tempo, transistions, mood) to match up and im glad to say it did - but not for the whole synch. I'd recommend stopping this synch anytime after track 4 but that doesnt matter as Tracks 1 to 4 cover the opening 45+ minutes of the film which is when the action happens. The rest of the synch is ok-ish but theres not a lot happening onscreen and i think it takes away from how good the first 45 mins is.

As the tracks are quite long i'll pick up on certain scenes or moments i liked rather than individual songs;

The whole Trinity chase scene.
The ambient passage for the introduction of Neo in his room.
The strange women talking on the cd as we see Trinity whisper in Neo's ear.
The chase in Neo's office.
The ambient passage for the interrogation with the Agents.
The mood change when Neo is bugged.
The mood change when they search Neo for the bug.
The ambient passage for the meeting with Morpheus.
The spooky sounds for Neo's 'rebirth' folowed by the ambient passage for his recovery.

After that the synch sort of falls apart so i'd suggest stopping there.

****************************************

The second part of the synch using 'De-loused...' for the final 48 minutes or so of the film was very good.
The only disappointing part was the Subway fight as the music was way too minimal and quiet and so didnt fit. However even that scene picked up at the end.
The other key parts from the final section of the film were great; the Lobby, Morpheus' rescue (one bit in particular was fantastic) and the climax of the film. I also picked up more lyrical synchs in this one. Great synch.

I would certainly recommend checking out either part of this synch (although i'd suggest the shorter version of the first part)."

Inauguration of the Crushed Velvet Pleasuredome pt. 1

This synch by Looney Runes combines Kenneth Anger's "inauguration of the pleasuredome" with the Legendary Pink Dots "Crushed Velvet Apocalypse" CD. And posted 10 minutes of part 1 on Youtube.

The mystical carnival music matches the psychodelic dream world of the movie. I have no earthly idea what the music or movie are about but the mood, tempo, and poetic lyrics have a mystic harmonic nature with the bizarre movie. I give it an A for mood. I am looking forward to further bewilderment by the other parts. I can understand why nobody comments on it because they don't understand what is supposed to be happening.

"I have no earthly idea what the music or movie are about but the mood, tempo, and poetic lyrics have a mystic harmonic nature with the bizarre movie."

Lord Shiva, The Magician, wakes. A convocation of Theurgists in the guise of figures from mythology bearing gifts: The Scarlet Woman, whore of heaven, smokes a big fat joint; Atstarte of the Moon brings the wings of snow; Pan bestows the grapes of Bacchus; Hecate offers the sacred mushroom, Yage, wormwood brew. The vintage of Hecate is poured. Pan's cup is poisoned by Lord Shiva. The orgy ensues - the magick masquerade at which Pan is the prize. Lady kali blesses the rites of the children of light as Lord Shiva invokes the godhead with the formula "Force and Fire".

Inauguration of the crushed velvet pleasuredome (pt.2)

Inauguration of the crushed velvet pleasuredome (pt.2) by Looney Runes is even better than part 1. The lyrics and transitions are better. I like the music better too. But what in tarnation is going on? Everything that happens is completely unexpected and unexplainable. I can see why nobody is commenting on the pairing. There is no connection to our side of reality.

Looney runes, what made you think of pairing these two? Where did you learn of the bizarre music and movie?

Subject: Review of "Darkest City" by Stegokitty

Dear Reader,

The “Darkest City” synchronism is hypnotic in beauty. Much of the music matched the movie in some form. All the music is applied appropriately. I never had the feeling that there is dead space and only consulted the list of checkpoints to see who the music was by. Music transitions are right on target. I might be biased because I enjoy most of the music used and was very pleased that the songs are played in entirety (you know, start to finish). Yes, “Darkest City” is spectacular. It truly enhanced both the music and the movie. I give this full length harmony an A+ and recommend it for surreal pleasure.

Because the songs were not from the same artist, the level of difficulty in matching was reduced. Because different artists were used, the ear did not become bored with the same tone. In some cases, I would have like to have heard other artists but I never felt that the music did not match. Much of the music used has a fantasy vibe to it.

Sincerely,
Karl Tune

Total Recall / Amnesiac

I found the setup on that great "Pink Floyd Movie Synchronization Story" website and I decided to try it. I love all three parts during "Pyramid Song". There are quite a few lyrical matches too.

Michael Jackson Music Video to J-Pop

Galactic Hombre writes that Nakaudo's creations putting Michael Jackson Music Video to J-Pop are really good. He has been showing them off to others. One of the other people who saw it thought they were an actual promotional video for Michael Jackson.

Some day soon I may actually see them with my eyes.

Here is my Drukqs / Oz

Here is my Drukqs / Oz review;

Since I'm an aphex twin fan, I decided to give it a try, knowing that richard will probably never do anything like this, i did it in the name of chaos.

the first track (jynweythek ylow) matches nicely the starting of the film, where the titles are shown, quite a match. If you know the album (catagorized heavy IDM - techno) you'll know that every one or two tracks of crazy upbeats and electronic noise there is a melodic, piano drived track to calm down the journey, that part worked nicely.

if you are used to see the Oz with the DSotM, you'll be quite dissappointed because firstly, there are no lyrics (much), and the music is much more upbeat and therfore is not an analogy to the pink floyd synch.

the second part of the first CD, where the avarage mood is more soft, you can catch nice combos like having ambient noise to the walking in the forest, or having a piano melody when they enter Oz (i think it's "avril 14th" or another one).

Comparing the synch to jabti, this synch is a 6.

Wish You Were Here/It's a Wonderful Life

I have been wanting to watch "Wish You Were Here/It's a Wonderful Life" by Mr. Stillman (I thought Mr.Wendland discovered it since it is on his web page) since I came here. There have been good reviews and I wanted to check it out. Every December I forget to tape the movie to synch to. I finally decided to rent it.

I thought it was a very good mood synch and many sounds consitently matched up with something. The lyrics matched quite a bit with the theme of the movie. I was quite pleased and give it a 9 for mood.

Yet warning bells were ringing in my head the whole time. But I could not figure what was wrong. Then I realized. It was the colorized versioun. oh bother. This movie was not meant to be colorized. The movie visual was balanced for black and white.
