Since the Arkive contest cannot accept copyrighted materials, it does make things a lot more challenging. After all, most popular music (ie. music recorded since the 30s) is copyrighted... same with film. There's actually very little public domain recorded material out there, or at least there appears to be.
Creative Commons is a great resource for finding source material. CC was started by Lawrence Lessig (and others), in order to address just that issue, the lack of source material for new projects in these media.
YouTube.com might also be a good source... they do specifically have a policy against uploading copyrighted material, and most of what's out there is amateur video. However, it's not always clear what is/is not copyrighted. Although I have to admit, their service makes a great resource for hosting the video files. And you can even embed them in web pages.
