to put a fine point on it

I've revisited some of my syncs lately, "Fellowship Of The IV" being one of those. A while back I posted directions for lining up the sync - ie: from the main menu on the DVD push play... But then there's the question of which version of the DVD do you own, what about lag time, etc, etc.

So to put a fine point on it, pause the DVD at 0:00 and Led Zepp IV at :36. That accounts for the segue from the main menu to the actual movie, which is part of the sync.

That's with the 2 hr 58 min NTSC version of Lord of the Rings - Fellowship. As for repeat plays, there's another variable. I think there's about 4 seconds between the end of one play and the beginning of the next. In my DVD version of the sync, when Led Zeppelin sings "The ringwraiths ride in black", the ringwraiths appear on the screen. That happens a couple of times... on the repeat plays.

I'm busy reauthoring the sync on a dual layer DVD with surround and subtitles. You may recall me mentioning that I like to watch syncs with the subs and a little bit of movie volume. Here's why!>>>

Hope you got a kick out of that. Number 17 took about 500 hours.

So it's back to work I go - no rest for the wicked!

version?

Hey DeVille... I think it might be helpful to add the version you're using's "name", although the length certainly helps. I would guess it's the first "extended" edition, the four disc set that came out, with that time signature, but that's without actually consulting my discs (I have the theatrical version and the first extended... I skipped the 3rd version they released because the film itself wasn't any different and paying more for the extras just seemed like they were dipping into that well too often, whereas the first extended edition was different enough and yet I also wanted the theatrical... probably more explanation than needed)...

So, although the length is helpful, what I personally always remember is the "cut's" name... (so if we were talking Blade Runner, you have the theatrical, the first Director's cut, and now the final cut plus the workprint as available sources... for my Akira/Blade Runner synch, the version I used was the first Director's cut)...

'Mothership' - Led Zep

Any synchs for this best of?

Fellowship of the IV

Articles
dvd - led zeppelin meets lord of the rings

While the idea of blending Led Zeppelin IV (aka Zoso) with Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings may not be immediately obvious, there are a couple of interesting things to point out.

First off, the song Battle of Evermore is a direct reference to J.R.R. Tolkien's classic and seminal fantasy creation.

But, you say, that doesn't mean the sync works. Well, true. It doesn't necessarily mean the sync works, but, surprisingly, there are some interesting interactions between Zep's hard rock classic and Peter Jackson's stunning cinematic accomplishment.

For starters, this is one case where you will find that a sort of thematic sync/match is achieved. The most keen syncs are, of course, those where for a moment the music and the movie phase together. It's like sitting in your car at a red light in the turning lane. Your blinker's on. The blinker of the dude in front of you is flashing, as well. Of course, yours and his blink at different rates, but if you watch, the two sets of blinkers will cycle through and, for just a moment, they will match.

But that's not the only kind of match. The Fellowship of the IV, as The DeVille, purveyor of this sync, has dubbed his hybrid, contains some interesting fusion of audio/video themage.

One notable instance occurs early in the film where we are introduced to the Shire. At this point we segue into the song The Battle of Evermore. While you may object that this is, in fact, a reference to a bit of action in Tolkien's story and this Shire business is actually rather pastoral and idyllic, the fact remains that the mood tone of the song fits remarkably well with this dip into the world of the Hobbits.

Later, when Gandalf and Bilbo sit down for a very serious discussion, the viewer finds himself entering the musical realm of Zep's overplayed but still classic "Stairway to Heaven", whose tone is more in line with the headiness of the pair's conversation.

Of course, there are also lyrical matches to be found, not the least of which occurs, again, early in the movie, in the prologue in fact. When Zep sings about "ain't got no soul" the camera lurches in on the face of the always masked villain and ruler of Mordor. A nice sync, I must say.

At any rate, these serve as a couple of examples. The DeVille's combo of Zep and Tolk obliquely covers a range of the sync experience, embracing thematic blends, lyrical points and musical/visual line-ups.

Timing of "Fellowship of the IV"

Greetings,

Here are the instructions for syncing "Fellowship of the IV".

You will need:
The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring DVD (2:58 version)
Led Zeppelin IV CD (Atlantic 19129-2)

Pause the CD at the beginning (0:00) so it will begin playing with no delay when you hit the play button. If your player has a repeat feature, tell it to repeat. If not, you'll have to pay attention and press play again immediately the split second it ends.

Cue up the DVD to the main menu.

In the amount of time it takes to say the words press play, press play, that's just what you do. Press play on the DVD, then immediately press play on the CD player. Should take a little less than 1/2 second. There is a brief transition that takes you from the main menu to the movie. It's part of the sync.

A couple of years ago I made a list of about 150 matches, but never got around to typing it up. Maybe I'll look around for it and do that. I'ts not that I'm trying to be secretive about how to line up the syncs, I'm just lazy, I admit it. Here's a preview of a few things you can expect to see: http://www.thedevillesworkshop.com/Previews/LOTR-FellowshipOfTheIV/Index.html

I hope you enjoy the sync.

Lord sync

I recently have seen The DeVille's sync of "Lord Of The IV" & its really amazing. Being that Zep IV is played several times through the course of the film, the songs match up better in some scenes then others & some songs match the scenes everytime. And when it comes to DSOTR...I have both the stegokitty Dark Side of the Rainbow & The Deville's Dark Side of Oz. Both match very well. Thanks to all in the community that take the time & patience to share these amazing sync-films!

Led Zep II

Any LOTR syncs for this album?

Gollum is mentioned in the lyrics...

timing for movie

Start the cd when the New Line Cinema screen disapears. I got through 4x of playing the cd on repeat and was impressed. Im a big fan of Zep so for me this is one of my favs.

so...

who has done the syncs he lists?

SyncMovies.com

Hey, check out www.syncmovies.com. That 'Deville' guy sells that particular synch, plus a lot of other ones. I'm sure if you email him and ask him he'll help you out. I once emailed him about a synch called "The Ozzorcist". Good luck!

*bang* I'm dead.

el Giron, you can make

el Giron, you can make better synchs than DeVille, trust me.

And I rented Icky Flix from, um, Netflix. Ubercool! I like the way the animation or filming style varies from selection to selection.

Crossed my mind that it might work for some kind of group effort here, a la a Shared Fantasia.

You really think so?

Gee... thanks b! Have you seen any of the DeVille's synchs? To be perfectly honest, I never even tried the synch I emailed him about. "Icky Flix" is really good, but I think "Eskimo" is way better. I really need some money to get a few more Residents albums.

*bang* I'm dead.

eskimo

Oh yeah, missed "Eskimo". You can get it from Netflix, btw. The full video version of the Commercial Album is also available there. Definitely putting those near the top of my cue.

Thanks for the tips!

I received 2 DeVille tapes a number of years ago. Wasn't impressed with his Nightmare Before Xmas creation (think the audio was from a band his son was in at the time), and the timing of the DSOTR version was off, in my opinion.

Ahh, OK.

You're very welcome. "Eskimo" has one of the best endings I have ever seen in a movie. At first it's kind of like this educational art film about Eskimo life, but then at the very end, *POOF* CAPITALISM!!It's hilarious! Actually, it's a little sad too. The thing about that DeVille guy is that his DVD's are really expensive. I wish I had a DVD player so I could copy my synchs to tapes and share them with people. I still have a two VCR set up. $21 + Shipping!? And they're a little off!? Lame.

*bang* I'm dead.

I checked out the Eskimo

I checked out the Eskimo video and prefer Icky Flix myself. It was still very interesting and certainly recommended.

Downloaded (finally) Duck Stab/Buster and Glen. I love it! By far my fav Residents album I've heard so far. This is the one people should begin with, perhaps.

I'm going to buy the Commercial Album next. It's not available for downloading at emusic.com, although I could have sworn it once was. Also have noticed they've taken *all* the Zappa off their site.

selling...

From what I know about copyright law, generally derivative works are not something that the entertainment companies allow (unless you're paying for that right). I read the copyright notice/disclaimer at syncmovies.com and, at least the way I'm reading it, it seems to imply that the owner of syncmovies is claiming a derivative work copyright for those synchs.

I would imagine that site is surviving right now because it hasn't been noticed by the entertainment companies.... but when it does get noticed (I suppose if it gets noticed), I would guess it will not survive. At least, under our current copyright regime. Although I may personally agree that a synch is a valid derivative work, unless syncmovies is paying licensing for the original work, he's definitely in violation of US copyright law. After all, he is using entire works... and look at how much trouble sampling things like 3 seconds has gotten rap artists into.
