Problems with spam...

Site Issues/Feedback

So, FYI, due to the sudden intrusion into the site of a spammer, I've enabled auto-unpublish of comment spam. The way the filter works is by probability, and I've set the threshold fairly high. HOWEVER, this may mean that some people's comments get unpublished while the filter is being further "trained." I will try to keep up on republishing them, but since this is the 2nd time I've had to clean up after and then block the account of this particular spammer, I felt drastic measures were called for.

To reiterate, this site has a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for spam.

peace,

How far is too far....

Every time I think that I've gone too far with spam-blocking, it starts up again...

I'm now debating making all user accounts by default "untrusted", which would require approval, but then add the folks here I know to a "trusted" group, which would not require approval (so, JayDingo, DeVille, Karl, Baker, el Giron, etc.). That would mean cutting down on the immediacy of posts from new users (until I got around to approving them), but it would eliminate the current crop of spammers who just register for new accounts when I block them.

It's funny... computers are supposed to eliminate busy work, and yet they're so bad at the idea of discriminating (in the good sense of what humans do). Oh, well... the idea above is one I'm considering now... I'd really rather not have to go that far. It's starting to feel a bit draconian...

just when...

I was starting to think that the spam filtering was overkill since only a few non-spam comments were being caught by it in the last week or so. Woke up this morning though to find a spam bomb had been dropped on the site, but only 1 out of the many made it through the filtering. So, although it sux that it occassionally catches real comments, I guess I can't really afford to turn it off.

And here's a public note for the spammers that continue trying to hit this site... you might make it through temporarily, but that's all it will ever be, temporary. Go find somewhere else to blitz with your crud.

so far...

This appears to be working pretty well so far, at least I haven't seen any more incidents of this crud turning up, and haven't found any comment posts that got "unposted" due to the spam filtering.

Anyone had any issues?
