synchronicity at Last Fm

Group Shared Projects

For anyone interested, I have started a group at last Fm for the purpose of sharing musical tastes among the synchronicity Arkive. I named the group synchronicity radio. Last Fm gives you the option to play music on their software, plug-ins that allow you to play music on other players and also an online player. If you are a musician, you can even upload your own music for sharing.

To sign up for Last Fm or to learn more, go here:
http://www.last.fm/

The group can be found by clicking the 'users" tab. Next click the 'groups' tab. Then search 'synchronicity radio'.
At present, there is no profile picture for the group, forums or restrictions on who can join. So, let's see where this goes...

All Major Labels to Stream Free Music on Last.fm

here is the article at wired.com

Stats for our group...

Arkiver...
Pink Floyd (overall most listened)
The Future Sound Of London (for the week)
Deathcab For Cutie - I will follow you into the dark (top overall)

Baker B...
Amon Düül II (overall)
Colonel Claypool's bucket of Bernie Brains (for the week)
Enchantment - nighttime sky (top overall)

Leighton
The Flaming Lips (overall)
Sufjan Stevens (for the week)
Broken Social Scene - anthems for a 17 year old girl (top overall)

Myself.....Negativland (overall)
Johnny Moped (for the week)
Plan 9 - I like girls (top overall)

Several interesting things I am not familiar with in this list. I gave a listen to Amon Düül, and really liked what I heard! I had (prematurely?) decided that I didn't like Krautrock (offensive term?) but I really dug this. I guess overall, about half of these artists I haven't really given a good listen to. I have really been enjoying our radio station! It has become very eclectic.

Regarding my stats: I really didn't like the Johnny Moped CD...and Plan 9 is the late 70s psychedelic/surf band and not The Misfits cover band of the same name.

And finally, here's the days top stories.

Thanks for joining, jaydingo!

If you have any questions about how to use last.FM, how to configure it for use with your media player, or whatever let me know. I have enjoyed the group and last.Fm's many features. Recently, I added a widget to my blog that displays my "most recently listened" stats over an image of J.R. "Bob" Dobbs. Talk at you later! ~L

last.FM?

Well, this little endeavor hasn't really taken off. I was really hoping more people would get involved.

new features

Some new features added to Last.Fm today.

First, if you go to your dashboard and click the 'videos' tab you will now see a page full of videos by artists you have listened to. Cool, huh?

Also, they have made the video screen bigger.

Lastly, they have added a new widget called the taste-o-meter. Embed this widget and anyone who wanders past your Myspace or blog can compare music taste with you.

Well, that's all for now. Keep listening.

Hi lr. I must admit to listening to almost no radio, but I'll try to see what others have listened to from time to time.
Keep up the good work, baker.

Amazon .mp3 store...

Anyone tried out the new Amazon MP3 store yet?

Being copyright-obsessed, I try to make it a rule never to buy media that I can't make proper use of. Which means generally not buying anything with DRM (digital rights management). I have broken that rule a few times, but always when I was able to break the DRM to "re-assert" my ownership rights. Technically, yes, that is breaking the law (1998 DMCA, which makes breaking the DRM illegal, even if you don't do anything illegal, like share on the net), but like Stegokitty commented in our podcast, to me that's like driving 5 miles over the speed limit.

So, anyway... point being, I'm always on the look-out for media that doesn't have DRM, so that I can play by the rules but still get what I want. Which is why I find the news of Amazon's store so interesting. This one will work with iPods (.mp3 format), which is always key...

I tried out 1 paid download so far... and 1 free track. I have to say, seems pretty nifty to me....

Anyone else?

Sorry to ramble... it's early...

music synchronicity...

small moment of synchronicity (sorta)...

In playing around on this, the free track I grabbed has a kind of "synch-y" feel to it. I dig it, and am actually thinking of grabbing the album now, or at least previewing it. I'd never heard of The Apples In Stereo... but here's a link to the song, in case you were curious...

i like that

I noticed their info page on last.fm mentions Olivia tremor control. I got a cd by them, on a whim (never heard them before) and really liked them as well.

playlists for synchs

Is it possible to create playlists for other last.fm people to listen to?

if it is then surely we could make the playlists the track order for synchs and then people with the film but not the relevant album can try out our synchs?

looney runes's picture

playlists

Theoretically, yes. However, your playlist must be at least 15 tracks. Also, you may have noticed that many tracks only exist as 30 sec previews. However, if you search a "tags" or "artist" you will notice a blue or gold play button next to each available song. Blue buttons are previews, while gold ones are full tracks. So far I have been unable to find enough full length tracks from any given album to make such a playlist. For example, I found the song "echoes", but only the 'best of' version, not the 1971 meddle version. Then again, maybe I just haven't figured out the secret to finding the songs I'm looking for.

annoying

thats a pity - i thought i was on to something then!

Synch radio update

Due to recent appearance of visitors to our group radio station, joining will now be dependent on member approval. This is the only way to keep the songs on the station representative of members of the arkive community.

We already have quite a variety of stuff playing on our station, and it's interesting to look at members profiles and see what they have recently listened to. Each users profile also displays their top music for the week, top music overall, as well as their own personal station. I'm currently listening to the chemical brothers on 'arkiver's radio'.

I'm in...

Good deal, I'm in.

If it warrants it, I could always create a separate forum here for the last.fm'ers, rather than utilize a separate forum space, since that group is sorta semi-dedicated to the synching community and music sharing...
