The dark side of horror

Community Stories

I spent the last weekend at Screamfest, Florida's largest horror convention. The main vendor hall was huge, and every square inch was covered with freddy, jason, pinhead, etc. Except...this one booth that also featured some sci-fi, some old banned racist cartoons and such, a little porn and...yes he had a small monitor playing DSotR. It really seemed out of place there, but I guess that shows just how HUGE it has become. The DVD was actually titled "the dark side of Oz". I have never seen so many bootleg DVDs in my life. 90% of the vendors had a table full of 'em!

BTW, we had a great time. I got to meet Doug Bradley (pinhead) and Lloyd Kaufman (TROMA video). David Arquette was on hand to debut his new film "the tripper", a hilarious slasher/comedy with Paul Reubens (pee wee herman)as a sleazy concert promoter. It was a great film, I would highly recommend it when it comes out. We also participated in the "Zombiewalk"...a few hundred of us dressed as zombies took over the street in front of the resort. It was so fun.

Zombie Jamboree!

That my friend looks like it was a blast! Did you get to meet Betsy Palmer? Your girls zombie makeup is "dead on"!

didn't meet Betsy

She was a hoot, though. That voice! She hasn't even watched the films, as she hates seeing herself on film and doesn't like horror. She had no idea the film had such a cult following, She also said that she has never spoken to Kevin Bacon, who was also in friday the13th, though they have apartments on the same block in NY. Through that 'seven degrees of Kevin Bacon' theory, though, she figures they will one day meet again.

There were so many cool zombies! a sid vicious zombie complete with heroin rig, a zombie dog, fisherman zombie, marvel comics zombies...I wish I had brought my camera, but there was so much fake blood everwhere. There was a trail o fake blood and bloody handprints all up and down the street! It rocked. There is a zombiewalk website where you can find an event near you. I highly recommend going to one, if possible.

Here is a link to the news article about the event. If you watch the short video on the page you will see my wife and I shuffling down the street in our bloody lab coats. We appear right after the zombie dog segment.

No DVD

After paying a couple of hundred bucks for the room, $70 for tickets, costume expenses, gifts for friends, food, whiskey/beer I couldn't afford anything for myself.

Most of the guest speakers and such stayed in seclusion. I did see Michael Berryman (hills have eyes), Betsey Palmer (mrs. Vorhees), Tom Savini, Lloyd Kaufman and David Arquette. Some of these actors are real snobs, though. Robert Englund, for example, stayed in the autograph/picture room for the entire time. There was an 8 hour wait at any given time to get into the autograph/photo room...and that would cost you $20! There was a line out the door the whole weekend, so I'm guessing they sold a few autographs.

The funniest thing to happen all weekend was witnessing a drunken Doug Bradley (pinhead) curse out a guy in a Jason costume for refusing to speak to him. Mr. Bradley was the only real accessible star, as he seemed to want to party/get laid. I let him read my copy of the itinerary and he nearly walked away with my registration paperwork during check-in! It would have been rather ironic if "pinhead" had caused me to miss the convention! It was rather sad at the last night's pool party, though, when everyone was more or less over him and he was following around fans and hanging on the ladies. Seeing the sad, lonely side of fame really puts things in perspective.

David Arquette had to cut his talk short to return his wife's (Courtney Cox) call. I'm betting she wears the pants in that family. haha. He seemed really happily wasted and having a good time.

At any rate, we enjoyed a weekend out of the house.
