Dawn Side of the Moon

Mood:
Transcendental
Approx. Running Time:
2 hours

Ingredients

  • "2001: A Space Odyssey," Kubrick 1968
Setup Instructions
Dear Researchers,

This is a conjunction of Arthur C. Clarke's "2001: A Space Odyssey" and Pink Floyd's 1973 "Dark Side of the Moon".

In the beginning of the movie, after you see the moon, you will see "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Presents". At this point, start track 3 "Time" and follow it with tracks 8, 9, 6, 5, 4, and 7.

Alternatively, as soon as the bone transforms into the satellite, start track 5.

Then pause the music and wait for Dr. Floyd's presentation, which reveals the monolith to the audience, to be over. After the presentation, a ship will fly over the lunar landscape. As soon as you see through a window, the ship start to land and kick up dust, start track 1 and follow it with track 2. (I am a lunatic to think there is a missing song in-between 7 and 1 here?).

As soon as Frank's hand reaches left just before the second time you see Dave sitting in the spaceship (person without helmet on) after the "Intermission", start track 1 and play through to the end of track 3.

Also, as soon as Frank's hand reaches left just before the second time you see Dave sitting in the spaceship (person without helmet on) after the "Intermission", start track 4 followed by 6 and 7. Immediately follow with tracks 8 and 9.

Alternately, when drifting Frank is grabbed by the pod, then you see Dave, then HAL's eye, as soon as you next see the empty seats inside of the main spaceship, start track 1 and play through to track 5.

Start track 8 as soon as you see the red computer screen on left disapear just before Dave climbs the stairs to neutalize HAL and follow with track 9.

Start track 7 when you see the first celestial body rising from the bottom of the screen after "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite" disappears from the screen.

Start track 2 as soon as you see the red dot in the rift in time and space.

Test Question: How many times is track 7 played?

Additional Notes
I believe these three excerpts from "J. F. Kennedy’s
Address at Rice University on the Nation's Space Effort Houston, Texas, USA, September 12, 1962" have much meaning.

"Those who came before us made certain that this country rode the first waves of the industrial revolutions, the first waves of modern invention, and the first wave of nuclear power, and this generation does not intend to founder in the backwash of the coming age of space. We mean to be a part of it--we mean to lead it. For the eyes of the world now look into space, to the moon and to the planets beyond, and we have vowed that we shall not see it governed by a hostile flag of conquest, but by a banner of freedom and peace. We have vowed that we shall not see space filled with weapons of mass destruction, but with instruments of knowledge and understanding."

"We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not only because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

"The growth of our science and education will be enriched by new knowledge of our universe and environment, by new techniques of learning and mapping and observation, by new tools and computers for industry, medicine, the home as well as the school. Technical institutions, such as Rice, will reap the harvest of these gains."

The space program is one of the great marvels of our civilization. On July 20, 1969, humanity set foot on the moon because of the sharing of ideas and knowledge. We built on the knowledge and hard work of those who came before us. Take advantage of your education because you are the foundation of tomorrow’s civilization.

It was a great honor to have Neil Armstrong speak at my graduation ceremony. He is very excited about our future.

Sincerely,
Karl Tune

rewatching

On some of the tracks, I had to scratch my head and wonder what I was thinking in 2002 when I first tried this. This weekend I was rewatching this sync and also tried a new combination. I was laughing about Leighton's comment and came up with an easier track play.

As soon as Frank's hand reaches left just before the second time you see Dave sitting in the spaceship (person without helmet on) after the "Intermission", start track 5 followed by 6, 7, 8, and 9.

"Rainbows and waterfalls
Run through my mind."

The Brothers Johnson "Strawberry Letter 23"

Think i might try this part:

"In the beginning of the movie, after you see the moon, you will see "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Presents". At this point, start track 3 "Time" and follow it with tracks 8, 9, 6, 5, 4, and 7."
