What is Synchronicity?
Submitted by arkiver on Fri, 2008-02-08 11:22. Synchronicity PrimerAn Introduction to Synchronicities
- What is a synchronicity??
- synchronicity
- The match formed by a piece of visual imagery (video tape or film) with an unrelated piece of music, which forms a new and different experience from that originally intended by either work.
![]() | Synchronicities are instances where a certain clip, or even a whole movie, are found to fit extraordinarily well with different music, specifically music that evokes a surreal, or psychedelic, feel, that is intensified by the pairing. This site takes its name from the Jungian term of "synchronicity," of a resonance formed between two events unrelated in time and space. This non-local, non-linear connection defies rational explanation. Although the majority of examples listed here cannot really be considered synchronicities in Jung's terminology, the term seems to describe the emotional state evoked better than anything else. |
Early in the history of film, it was discovered that the music a piece of visual imagery is displayed with has a powerful influence on how it is perceived and received by the human mind. Films with highly emotional, majestic scores were found to have a greater emotional impact on their audience than similar scenes with no music, or even silence. William S. Burroughs, always an experimenter with the art of montage, was one of the first pioneers to put random clips of film to different unrelated music, creating the art of the synchronicity. The concept was an integral part of the psychedelic scene of the 1960s.
Part of the appeal of synchronicities is that it allows the viewer a more active degree of participation in the viewing experience. Instead of just sitting there passively, you get to take part in what you see, by setting things up, by trying new combinations yourself. It's kind of subversive that way, because what you see is not necessarily what was originally intended as the viewing experience. It allows fans to reclaim participation in what they're seeing and hearing. It's a true multimedia experience, interactive at its easiest.
What do you need to venture into the world of Synchronicities??
| An Open Mind, a sense of humor, and, most importantly, WONDER!! | ![]() |
| A Stereo. A programmable CD Player is the easiest way to do the Synchs. Records (Vinyl), tapes, or 8-Tracks have been used as well, although much more difficult. |
| A Television, for your viewing enjoyment. The bigger, the better... | ![]() |
![]() | A VCR, for the video portion of the Synch. |
I first became interested in synchronicities when a friend of mine showed me the Jupiter And Beyond The Infinite synch listed here. I think if you try this, you too will be hooked on the concept. Give it a try.... experimentation is the name of the game here. Ideas and thoughts can be discussed on the SynchBoard.

Rolling Stone names DeVille "King Of The Stoner Rock Movies"
Submitted by The DeVille on Sun, 2008-07-27 22:16. Community StoriesHigh, Guys
Well, I haven't posted in a while, so I thought I'd share a few things with you. My "rougues gallery" of syncs is now at eighteen if you can believe it. Author R. Gary Patterson is lining up national and international radio programs on which I'll appear as his guest (knock wood) beginning in the next couple of weeks. What's on my timeline now? "The Butterfly Effect" and Staind's "Break The Cycle", and it's awesome. Oh, and I finally got around to writing a press release which I've already sent out to a couple hundred places.
Apparently BoingBoing thinks it's just way too cool for them, but I did hear back from SKUNK magazine and they want to do a full spread!
So, submitted for your reading enjoyment, here's the press release...
--- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ---
ROLLING STONE NAMES DEVILLE "KING OF THE STONER ROCK MOVIES"
07-25-2008 Atlanta, GA - Earlier this year, just in time for 4/20, Rolling Stone discovered an artist, known as "The DeVille", who combines classic rock albums with classic movies. It has long been known that eerie synchronicities exist between MGM's "The Wizard Of Oz" and Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side Of The Moon", and The DeVille’s mix is regarded world wide as the very best, with the most precise synchronization. But that was only the beginning…
Since his original 1999 mash-up, "The Dark Side Of Oz", The DeVille has perfected the art form. At his web site, www.SyncMovies.com, you will find such compelling combinations as "Night Of The Living Zombie" (Rob Zombie’s "Hellbilly Deluxe" meets George A. Romero‘s "Night Of The Living Dead"), "Fellowship Of The IV" (Peter Jackson’s "Fellowship Of The Ring" meets Led Zeppelin’s "IV"), and "Nevermind The Memento" (Nirvana’s "Nevermind" meets Christopher Nolan’s "Memento").
"Sometimes it’s the movie first, sometimes it’s one line in a song - whether a conversation or a dream, synchronicity is my constant source of inspiration", says The DeVille. "Psychologist Carl Jung defined this phenomenon, but that really doesn’t explain it. You can only experience it."
The DeVille’s gallery currently contains eighteen completed multimedia masterworks. "The DeVille is the man, watch his movies if you dare!", declares Rolling Stone editor Evan Schlansky. In his article "Meet The King Of Stoner Rock Movies", Mr. Schlansky praises The DeVille‘s collection calling "Fellowship Of The IV", "The one sync to rule them all!" Renowned rock historian R. Gary Patterson, author of "Tales From The Darkside: Rock & Roll Myths, Legends And Curses", simply states, "They’re the best Christmas present I ever got!"
Despite the resistance of most major media labels, the devout mash-up audience continues to grow worldwide via the internet, disco raves and that most powerful marketing instrument: word of mouth. Syncs by The DeVille have been showcased in venues around the world, from theaters and clubs to planetariums and television. "I currently have fifty two additional mash-ups in various stages of development", The DeVille revealed. "My muse won’t let me rest".

Solstice Festivities
Submitted by Karl Tune on Sun, 2008-06-29 11:46.Very good class. You have drawn beautiful pictures of your summer vacation. I would like you each to stand in front of the class and tell us about your picture.
We have Trish's picture of Disney World. Trish gets up and walks to the front of the class. She has pretty bows in her hair. She explains how Disney World if full of family fun. See all the smiles, butterflies, and rainbows.
Next is Mike's pictures of the beach. Mike shuffles up front and explains how fun it was to bond with his Dad while fishing. See the picture of the two people fishing.
Next is…well… Karl's? Now maybe Karl can explain his picture, Ey? Karl walks up front looking a little wild eyed. Karl starts to describe his picture. "These are ..."
The teacher interrupts, "Those triangle buildings, those pyramids! Did you go to Egypt?"
Karl shakes his head, "No".
The Teacher continues, "Those people walking around the pyramids look like blue cartoon characters! Did you go to 'Toonworld' for vacation?"
Again Karl shakes his head, "No."
The Teacher continues, "And what about those flying objects? Your planes do not have any wings and there are purple bug eyed people looking out the windows? You went to Cape Canaveral this summer didn't you?"
Again Karl shakes his head, "No."
The befuddled teacher continues, "And what about that car being towed in the air by one of the rockets! Is that your family in the flying station wagon?"
Finally, Karl says, "Yes!"
The perplexed teacher continues, "And what about those giants on the hills?"
At last Karl gets to speak, "Oh... those! They are not giants. They are geoglyphs. During the summer solstice, ey, they depict Vangelis' 1984 'Soil Festivities' starting 7 minutes and 1 second after you see the spaceship following the intermission in Kubrick's, '2001: A Space Odyssey'. I call it 'Solstice Festivities'."
The red faced teacher states, "Karl, you did not complete the assignment as instructed. This is not your 'summer vacation'. You drew some alien invasion. Go stand in the corner with the dunce cap. I can see this is going to be a long school year."
Later at lunch, the other children taunt Karl. "Look out spaceboy! Here comes another UFO!" as they throw an empty milk carton at his head.
The Diving Bell
Submitted by Karl Tune on Sun, 2008-06-08 21:31.Unpause Pink Floyd's "The Division Bell" track 1 from time 0:00 when you see ripples in the water just before the water worm shows up in "The Abyss" Special Edition (171 minutes long). Then play track 10 "Lost For Words". After 10 finishes, play 2 through 9 back to back and skip to track 11.
The regular edition of "The Abyss" has different scenes which mess up the timing.
The Rooster
Submitted by gWiZ on Tue, 2008-06-03 05:54.I've been slaving away finding albums that could possibly synch with "The Crow" starring Brandon Lee. Then it hit me, Dirt by Alice in Chains. They both give off a similar mood and it made me go WOAH! The first play through was phenomenal, The second play dwindles a little bit but it comes right back. One of the best tracks in this synch is the rooster, its just surprising how well it works with the movie. Every track in the first play through is very relevant to whats going on i might put up a synch list if you dont catch everything that goes on.
IMPORTANT
Pay very close attention to the lyrics, this is a very lyrical piece.
:THE SETUP:
Get your copy of The Crow and push play on Dirt when you see THE CROW in white letters on a black background. This happens after you see Brandon Lee's name. If you did it right the words should fade away in 2 secods and Them Bones will start just before they do.
Here are some check points.
5:43 - 5:44 You hear a high pitched sound (kind of like a windchime) when the cop shakes the mustard.
6:32 as soon as you see the car you should here a distorted guitar that sounds kinda like an engine reving.
--------------------------------------------
The hints for this synch are quite obvious;
1. Brandon Lee and Layne Staley both died at a young age (40 may not be young but Layne could have live much longer than that.)
Brandon Lee February 1, 1965. Died March 31, 1993
Layne Thomas Staley (August 22, 1967 - ca. April 5, 2002)
They died close to the same date. ca or circa means about or close to. He could have possibly died on the same day because he was found dead in his appartment, he was dead for about a week or two but they estimated that he died around then.
2. Dirt was released in Febuary 1992, Brandon Lee died in March 1993, which is one month and one year later.
3. Alice in Chains next cd , Jar of Flies, was released in 1994 as was The Crow. This was their first album to peak at #1 on the billboard top 100's, The Crow was extremely popular as well and grossed $94,000,000 Worldwide including $11,774,332 in its opening weekend. Thats almost 1 billion dollars. It was also #10 of R-rated movies in 1994.
-----------------------------------------
Need i say more?
If you dont like the movie or Alice in Chains this probably isnt for you. if you havent heard of either you should go to your movie store and your record store and buy these!
One of the best parts is when track nine starts you hear all this crazy satanic laughing and Brandon lee just got shot in the hand, him and funboy are laughing. then Brandon turns his hand towards funboy and laughs santanicly as his hand regenerates.
A Different Historical Perspective
Submitted by Karl Tune on Wed, 2008-04-30 17:04. Community Stories | Synchronicity PrimerSimultaneity describes events existing or happening at the same time. This describes precisely what happens when we play separately packaged music and movie with an overlap of occurrence. A documented simultaneity (simo for short) can be reliably repeated by other experimenters of the simo craft.
Music seems to have always been played with other events like festivals, theater, or a romantic date. In June 1810, Ludwig van Beethoven produced the Tone Poem “Egmont”. A Tone Poem, also known as the Symphonic Poem, is an orchestra music movement where an extramusical event provides the narrative or illustrative element. This event may be a painting, a poem, a story, or something else. 1
This musical style was later championed by many composers like Richard Strauss who wrote the 1896 Tone Poem “Also sprach Zarathustra” to musically illustrate Nietzsche’s writings by the same name. “Also sprach Zarathustra” is known to us today as the theme music for Kubrick’s movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”. 2
Experimental and innovative politics, art, and culture came to be called Avant-garde (French for advace guard). Avant-garde culture challenges the static norm.

Ray of the Abyss
Submitted by Karl Tune on Mon, 2008-04-28 21:09.Dear Marine Biologist,
There has been a reported sighting of a unique creature at the bottom of the ocean. The fully staffed research vessel has been reserved . So secure your funding and round up your sampling equipment. We are diving to locate the "Ray of the Abyss."
This beast has been sighted in the benthic zones between the extended version of 1989 movie "The Abyss" (Special Edition 171 Minutes) and Madonna’s 1998 album "Ray of Light." Pause the movie when rat boy completely opens the door to see Garfield at the window, and the empty table where the nuclear warhead used to be. Pause when you see Garfield at this moment. This is after the water worm. Program your CD player to play tracks 1-11, 13, and 12. Pause "Ray of Light" at 0:00 of track one. Then simultaneously hit play of the movie and CD.
With scientific method we should be able to reproduce the sighting of this electric creature. Bring your cameras and video recorders. And please remember to have fresh batteries this time.
Your Salty Sea Captain,
Karl Tune

Meet the King of Stoner Rock Movies (Just in Time for 4/20!)
By now most everybody (stoned or otherwise) knows that watching The Wizard of Oz while listening to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon unspools a motherload of eerie synchronicities. But did you know that the same thing happens when you combine Led Zeppelin IV and The Fellowship of the Ring? Or The Matrix and Metallica’s “Black Album”?

The Men In Lateralus 2
Submitted by TheGuitarGuru on Sun, 2008-04-13 00:42.Another typical setup: Just start the album after the Columbia Pictures logo fades into blackness. The album ends shortly before the movie, so there's probably no need for a repeat.
