so... I'm toying with the idea of what to do for a second contest. Participation was a little low for the copyright-free synch idea, so I was thinking about another version of a remix/recut, possibly a new Arkive t-shirt design. My thought was to offer up the graphics files I used to create the logo of the site, and open them up to remixing, to see who can come up with the best design, using either those or other copyright free elements from around the web, to generate a shirt idea.

Thoughts? Is there enough interest to do something like that?

For those who didn't participate, I'm just curious, what kept you from putting together an entry? Was the restriction on copyrighted stuff too much (granted, not much I can do about that)? Was it just too hard to find copyright-free material that was good enough?

Since the Arkive contest cannot accept copyrighted materials, it does make things a lot more challenging. After all, most popular music (ie. music recorded since the 30s) is copyrighted... same with film. There's actually very little public domain recorded material out there, or at least there appears to be.

Creative Commons is a great resource for finding source material. CC was started by Lawrence Lessig (and others), in order to address just that issue, the lack of source material for new projects in these media.

YouTube.com might also be a good source... they do specifically have a policy against uploading copyrighted material, and most of what's out there is amateur video. However, it's not always clear what is/is not copyrighted. Although I have to admit, their service makes a great resource for hosting the video files. And you can even embed them in web pages.

Here's el Giron's entry, now hosted on YouTube.com, embedded now for viewing pleasure. YouTube's player uses Flash, but it should play in most browsers (if it doesn't, there may be some help at Youtube.com).
